Safety issues raised after fire

An early morning fire today may prove more costly to the owner of a trading company at 905C Ke'eaumoku St. than the estimated damages of $3,000 to structure and $10,000 to contents.

Firefighters use a gas powered saw to forcibly enter part of a building complex at the rear of 835 Keeaumoku St. The fire control center reported numerous calls on the 4:55 a.m. alarm.

Fire Capt. Richard Soo said the office-warehouse was stacked from floor to ceiling with 150 to 200 containers of butane cartridges. In addition, cartons of cigarettes were unstamped, and some cigarette lighters were not equipped for child safety, he said.

The Fire Department and state Consumer Product Safety Commission are among the agencies investigating violations.

The fire was reported at 4:55 a.m.

Four companies had it under control by 5:25 a.m.

2 more armed holdups reported

The December rash of armed robberies on O'ahu continued last night with the holdups of a dry-goods store in Kaimuki and a spa in Pearl City.

No injuries were reported. Different male suspects in both cases are still at large.

The Kaimuki robbery was reported at 8:30 p.m. The suspect said he was armed, although no weapon was seen. A gun, however, was displayed in the 5:30 p.m. robbery in Pearl City.

Man found in water identified

The medical examiner's office identified the man whose body was recovered 700 yards offshore of Kahala Beach Park yesterday as 74-year-old Kataichi Ninomiya.

Ninomiya was a shoreline fisherman who frequents the area.
