Flags to be lowered for late Herbert J. Honda

Advertiser Staff

Flags at state buildings will be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown today in honor of former state Rep. Herbert J. Honda of Maui, Gov. Linda Lingle announced.

Services are being held on the Valley Isle today for Honda, who died Dec. 14.

Honda, a Democrat, served from 1978 to 1992. He served as chairman of both the Corrections and Rehabilitation and Agriculture committees. He also was vice chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

After leaving the Legislature, he served on the state Board of Agriculture from 1994 to 2000.

"Former Rep. Honda served his district and the people of Hawai'i with integrity and conviction," Lingle said. "As mayor of Maui County, I had the privilege of working with Herb and I saw firsthand his passion for helping Hawai'i's farmers and agriculture industry, and his willingness to listen to the people he represented."
