Kahumoku feels ill, does not practice

Advertiser Staff

NEW ORLEANS — Lily Kahumoku came down with what Hawai'i hopes is the 24-hour flu Tuesday at dinner. She returned from the team outing and was sick all night. Kahumoku missed yesterday's practice and the championship banquet last night.

"Obviously, we're not the same team without her," UH coach Dave Shoji said. "But she's got 24 hours. We're hoping it's just a little flu bug."

It brought back memories of 1996, when NCAA Player of the Year Angelica Ljungquist fell ill the day before the NCAA final against Stanford. She also didn't practice but did force herself to play. With Ljungquist just a shadow of her dominant self, the Rainbow Wahine lost to Stanford, 15-7, 15-3, 15-5.

"I thought about '96," Shoji admitted. "I hope Lily is better than Angelica was. She usually finds a way to make it back."
