Nash propels Iolani

All-state forward Bobby Nash scored 22 points as host Iolani won its opening game of the Iolani Prep Classic by defeating Baldwin, 79-38, yesterday.

The defending state champion Raiders outscored the Bears 25-6 in the first quarter and 20-3 in the third to advance against defending Classic champion Fairfax ( of Los Angeles), which is ranked No. 17 in the nation by USA Today. That game is scheduled to start around 8 tonight.

All-state guard Derrick Low added 12 points and Zach Tollefson and Kyle Pape contributed 10 apiece for Iolani. Nick Neyd scored 10 points and Cody Nakamura nine for Baldwin.

In other games last night, Miami Christian, ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Today, held off Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.), 68-52; Fairfax defeated Pearl City, 96-30, and Franklin (Seattle, Wash.) beat Vincent (Milwaukee, Wisc.), 61-33.

Jesus Verdejo, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, scored 29 points for Miami Christian, which led just 14-13 after the first quarter.

Guillermo Diaz added 16 points and Sammy Hernandez 13 for Miami Christian.

Alfred Walsh scored 22 points and Darian Townes 13 for Archbishop Carroll.

Joshua Shipp led 11 Fairfax teammates in scoring with 16 points. Jamal Boykin added 14 points, and Kevin Bell and Alex Bausley each contributed 13 for Fairfax.

Corey Tavares and Kapena Wong led Pearl City in scoring with seven points apiece.

Aaron Brooks, a 6-foot senior point guard, scored 26 points and Kellen Williams 11 for Franklin.

Bill Mimis, a 5-8 sophomore guard, led Vincent with 16 points.
