The shooting occurred at about 3:45 a.m., said Lt. Bill Kato, supervisor of Honolulu police homicide investigations.

A police officer working special duty at the nearby Kahe Power Plant was able to provide license numbers for several vehicles fleeing from the parking lot and the information led to a traffic stop in Makakilo.

The two occupants of the car voluntarily agreed to be questioned by police, said Kato.

The man was shot as he walked toward a white- or silver-colored car, the victim's girlfriend told police. "She noticed two people bent forward in the car and then heard a loud boom and saw her boyfriend go down," said Kato, who noted the victim was shot in the chest area, possibly with a high-caliber round.

The woman told police no words were exchanged between her boyfriend and the occupants of the car, Kato said.

Since the body of 11-year-old Kahealani Indreginal was discovered near the 'Aiea Loop Trail last Friday, Kato's unit has investigated four cases, including today's murder.

Suspects have been charged in two of those cases while the other has been classified as an unattended death.

Christopher Clauburn Aki, 20, was charged Sunday with killing Kahealani and is being held at O'ahu Community Correctional Center in lieu of $5 million bail.

On Monday, 24-year-old Moses Thompson was charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of 31-year-old Ernest Rios Sunday in Waipahu.
