Rigg named Punahou girls' coach

Scott Rigg, who coached Punahou boys volleyball teams to five state high school championships in six years, will return next season to coach Punahou's girls varsity.

Rigg resigned 25 months ago after coaching Punahou's boys to their fourth straight state title because he was facing surgery on his lower back and neck.

"He's fine now and he's real excited about coaching the girls for the first time," Punahou athletic director Tom Holden said yesterday in announcing the appointment.

Rigg replaces John McDermott, who resigned last month after two seasons.

• CHAMINADE 89, UC SAN DIEGO 83: Leon Ballard had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and four teammates scored in double figures as the visiting Silverswords (4-6) defeated the Tritons (2-4). Chaminade broke from a 42-all halftime tie to open an 11-point lead midway through the half.
