Two die in skydiving accident

Advertiser Staff

Two skydivers, an instructor and a student, were killed this afternoon in an accident at Mokuleia.

Officials said the male instructor and the student — a Nebraska woman — from the Drop Zone jump school were jumping in tandem when their parachutes did not open and the two were killed.

The accident happened at 2:35 p.m. According to emergency personnel at the scene, the parachutes were tangled or did not open in the proper sequence.

The two skydivers landed in a resident's yard on Mahinaai Street. The owner of the house was in the yard and witnessed the accident.

Officials were still at the scene of the accident.

The airplane had taken off from Dillingham Airfield. The skydivers had jumped from 9,000 feet.
