Crewman arrested in stabbing on ship

Advertiser Staff

The FBI has arrested a crewman in the stabbing of another sailor aboard a fishing vessel off the coast of Maui.

A 30-year-old man was in guarded condition yesterday after he was stabbed Friday on the Pacific Horizon, which was trolling in waters off Maui.

The Coast Guard received a call at about 2 p.m. Friday that a man on board the Pacific Horizon had been stabbed. The vessel was about 140 miles east of Maui when the assault occurred, said Coast Guard spokesman David Mosley.

A Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Barbers Point was sent to the vessel and picked up the wounded man at about 3:45 p.m., Mosley said. The man, described as from the Philippines, was flown to Maui and taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was in guarded condition last night.

The vessel was brought into Honolulu yesterday and the FBI arrested a 45-year-old crewman, according to Special Agent Daniel Dzwilewski.

Mosley said the suspect also is a Philippines national.

The Pacific Horizon is a registered U.S. flag vessel, the FBI said.
