Libraries' Korea fund boosted

Moon's Book Club presented $10,000 from the Korea International Trade Association of Seoul, South Korea, to state librarian Virginia Lowell at a recent state Board of Education meeting. The donation will be added to the Moon's Book Club Endowment Fund, established with the Hawai'i Library Foundation to purchase Korean-language books and other materials for Hawai'i's public libraries.

The trade association, established in 1946, represents more than 90,000 companies involved in international trade and is South Korea's largest, most influential economic organization.


Seniors' program gets $10,000

The Pearl City Lions Club has received $10,000 from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to help the Salvation Army's seniors program in Leeward O'ahu. The Weinberg Friends Program helps service clubs conduct charitable work.

The Leeward seniors program provides exercise classes, transportation, craft activities and more.


Walk proceeds distributed

Christmas came early for 60 O'ahu charities that received a share of $220,000 from the Hawai'i Hotel Association. Proceeds from the group's annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk went to the following organizations:

The African Black American Education Center Hawai'i, Aloha Festivals, Alzheimer's Association, American Lung Association of Hawaii, Angel Network Charities Inc., Armed Services YMCA of Honolulu, Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Honolulu, Boy Scouts of America Troop 33, Breakthroughs for Youth at Risk, Children's Discovery Center, CrimeStoppers Honolulu, Diamond Head Theatre, Domestic Violence Clearing House & Legal Hotline.
