Hikers safe after night spent on ridge

Advertiser Staff

Two women hikers who spent the night on a high ridge in Kuli'ou'ou Valley were rescued today by Honolulu firefighters.

Josephine Hanta, 28, of Mo'ili'ili and Gina Camugin, 29, of Kaimuki were not injured, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo. The women were located at 6:45 a.m. by the Fire Department's helicopter.

Hanta and Camugin used a cell phone to maintain contact with the Fire Department. They first called at 4:50 p.m. yesterday to report themselves lost.

HFD rescue specialists and the helicopter searched until about 9 p.m. yesterday and resumed searching at 6:15 a.m. today.

"They spent the night up in shorts and tank tops," Soo said. "But they had the cellphone. We asked them to turn it back on when we started searching today."

The helicopter was able to land on the ridge to pick up the women, Soo said.
