Boat parade winners named

Winners of the Sixth Annual "Festival of Lights" Christmas Boat Parade that took place Dec. 14 are:

Boats 20 feet or smaller:

  • First Place, Wendy and Tre D'Innocenti; theme, Hawaiian Christmas.
  • Second Place, Bob and Jan Bright; theme, Peace on Earth Sailboat.
  • Third Place, Bill Aspengren; theme, Pirates of Hawaii Kai Marina.

Boats larger than 20 feet:

  • First Place, Richard Rosic; theme, Holiday Fantasy.
  • Second Place, David Joslin; theme, Christmas is Family and Friends.
  • Third Place, Jane and LeRoy Brown; theme, Weiner Dogs.

Barges:

  • First Place Tie, Cormac O'Carrol; theme, Captain Cook; and Jeff and Courtney Krantz; theme, Christmas in Hawai'i.


'Helping hands' recognized

At its 12th biennial conference, "Sharing and Caring: Choices for Caregivers," the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society recognized the following individuals for their commitment to improving the lives of older people in Hawai'i. The 2002 Na Lima Kokua Ma Waena O Makua (Helping Hands Across the Ages) awards were presented to:

  • Communications/Arts: Kathy Muneno, KITV4 reporter, who volunteers at Kuakini Medical Center.
  • Community Service: Anthony Kreig, president/CEO, Hale Makua Nursing Facility, Maui, for his instrumental role in developing Hale Makua, one of the state's most innovative and comprehensive long-term care health centers.
  • Research/Teaching: Professor James Pietsch, University of Hawai'i-Manoa School of Law, recognized as a driving force in the area of elder law.
  • Business: Hawaii Housing Development Corporation, represented by Randy Moore, president, and Gary Furuta, project manager. The corporation was recognized for its role in building affordable housing for elders with a commitment to coordination of services on-site.
  • Hideo "Major" Okada Scholar: Shannon Miyazaki, full-time University of Hawai'i-Manoa student majoring in premed.

Lanakila names board members

Lanakila has announced its 2002-03 board of directors:

Ko Miyataki, development director for the Ke Ali'i Pauahi Foundation and former president of Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation, is the newly elected member who will serve as a director.

Continuing are: Henry Wong, chairman; Masaichi Tasaka, vice chairman; Lynne Zane, secretary; Phyllis Shea, treasurer; and directors, Dr. Thomas Au, Linda Gilchrist, Harold Hu, Satoru Izutsu, Audrey Ng, Margaret Proffitt and Samuel Tanimoto.

Lanakila supports people with physical, cognitive or age-related challenges with the encouragement and skills to live their lives with dignity, independence and the self-assurance to become productive contributing members of the community.
