Man accused of stabbing crew mate on fishing boat

Advertiser Staff

A 45-year-old man from the Philippines was charged in a federal complaint yesterday with assaulting another crew member aboard a fishing vessel with a dangerous weapon Friday while the boat was on the high seas east of Maui.

According to an affidavit attached to the complaint, Rone Necesario, who had been a crew member aboard the boat, was interviewed at Maui Memorial Hospital's critical care unit and identified Hercules Potoy Boctot as his assailant.

Necesario told an FBI investigator that he asked Boctot to help him with a task but that Boctot became angry and began taunting him and tried to provoke him into a fight.

Necesario said the taunting continued until he kicked Boctot in the leg. Boctot left the area but returned a short time later and stabbed Necesario in the torso, the report said.

Necesario said he struggled to the bridge and told the captain what had happened. He said the captain ordered Boctot to drop the knife and then had the crew lock Boctot in the boat's bathroom.

Boctot is being held at the federal detention center in Honolulu.
