ADVERTISER CHRISTMAS FUND
Widower wants some holiday joy for 7-year-old son

By Rod Ohira
Advertiser Staff Writer

"J.A." is hurting.

The pain that shoots down his legs from a back injury is not as bad as the hurt from his broken heart.

The 43-year-old single parent of a 7-year-old boy injured his back while pushing a car at work 12 years ago and has been unable to work since then. His biggest setback, however, occurred six years ago when his wife died.

"I can't replace her," J.A. said. "There are two kinds of hurt that can't be replaced. You can't replace losing something that means a lot to you, like a wife or child.

• Checks made payable to The Advertiser Christmas Fund should be mailed to Helping Hands Hawai'i, P.O. Box 17328, Honolulu, HI 96817.

• Our anonymous Santa will match the first $25 of all contributions. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has pledged to match and double cash donations.

• Donations also may be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch. Anyone wishing to donate goods instead of money can do so at the Community Clearinghouse at 2100 N. Nimitz Highway, near Pu'uhale Road. For details, call 536-7234.

"The other kind of hurt, like my injury, you deal with day to day. It won't ever go away, even with surgery," he added.

J.A., who once worked two jobs to make ends meet, is frustrated that he cannot financially provide for his son without public assistance.

"I can't do what I'm trained to do because I can't bend down," he said. "I feel a lot of hurt, anger and frustration. I went from something to nothing.

"But I'm happy to have place to live and a son in my life," J.A. added. "He's a really good boy. He knows that I can't afford anything."

J.A. doesn't need anything for himself but would like something special for his son. It doesn't have to be big or expensive.

"All I want is something that will make my son smile," J.A. said.
