Pedestrian struck in Kalihi crosswalk

A 64-year-old woman was in critical condition last night after she was struck by a car while crossing North King Street in Kalihi early yesterday.

Police said the woman was hit by a white 1985 Mercedes Benz while she was in a crosswalk at 6:09 a.m. The driver of the car, a 60-year-old 'Aiea man, was heading east on North King near Richard Lane when he changed lanes to get by a parked truck.

Police said he then hit the woman, who was walking north-bound on North King Street. She was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with a head injury and was listed in critical condition. Speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors, police said.

One eastbound and one westbound lane were closed.

Police, nurses warn about solicitations

Police and the Hawai'i Nurses' Association are warning residents of unauthorized solicitations to help the striking nurses.

HNA spokesman Scott Foster said there have been several attempts to obtain food and money on behalf of the nearly 1,400 nurses who are on strike. Foster said the union has not authorized anyone to solicit food or money.

One man has been soliciting donations in the downtown area, Foster said. He is described as slim with curly hair and a pony tail.

Anyone who is contacted or approached to donate to the nurses should call police.
