Brooks a water polo All-American

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

UCLA senior Brandon Brooks (Punahou '99) on Monday was named first-team All-America goaltender for NCAA Division I by the American Water Polo Coaches Association for the second time.

Brooks, who set a UCLA career record of 700 saves, also was first-team in 2000. He was a second-team All-American in 2001 and received honorable mention in 1999.

"He's got all the accolades that anyone could ask for, and I know that was one of Brandon's goals going into this year ... but the most important thing to him was that he won two national championships (1999, 2000) while he was here. That will be a huge part of his legacy," UCLA coach Adam Krikorian said.

Brooks is currently "undergoing torture" in tryouts for the U.S. National Team, which will continue until a team is selected in March, a spokesman said.

FOOTBALL

Linfield (Oregon)

Senior offensive guard Daryl Agpalsa (Kamehameha '98, of Waikele) this week was named to three more All-America first teams and a second team.

Last week, Agpalsa was the first player from Hawai'i ever selected on the American Football Coaches Association Division III team.

On Sunday he was named to the d3football.com first team and yesterday he was named on the Football Gazette Division III first team. It also was announced yesterday that he was a first-team selection on the Hewlett-Packard Division III team.

Both the Football Gazette and Hewlett-Packard teams are selected by college sports information directors.

The Hewlett-Packard ballot included 377 players from the 228 NCAA Division III (non-scholarship) football-playing institutions.

On Monday, Agpalsa was named second-team Associated Press Little All-America, a team that covers NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA, or about 400 colleges.

Agpalsa, perhaps the littlest All-American at 5 feet 10, 220 pounds, helped Linfield set a school scoring record of 43.8 points per game in going 10-1 and reaching the NCAA Elite Eight.

BASKETBALL

• Cal State-Los Angeles

Her numbers on a trip home last week earned sophomore Monica Tokoro (Iolani '01 of 'Aiea) the Rawlings California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Player of the Week award for Dec. 16-22.

Tokoro scored 51 points in two games on 54 percent shooting (22-of-41).

She had 19 points, including the winning basket, in a 53-52 upset of eighth-ranked (NCAA Division II) Arkansas Tech last Wednesday and two days later got a season-high 32 points, and equaled her career-high of 12 assists in a 106-93 loss to Northwest Missouri State. Both games were played at Kilauea Gym as part of the Hoop 'n Surf Classic.

Tokoro, who is 5-3 on a tall day, also had six rebounds and four steals.
