HONOLULU

House absentee votes due soon

Voters who live in Hawai'i's 2nd Congressional District and who plan to cast absentee ballots in the special election to fill the vacancy that resulted from the death last fall of U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink must ensure their ballots are received by the appropriate city or county clerk's office by 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The district is made up of all Neighbor Islands and rural O'ahu.

At present, 348,342 voters have registered to cast ballots in the special election.

Street closures to be discussed

Street closures in the Chinatown area during planned Lion Dances Jan. 17 will be discussed at the Downtown Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 2 in the Pauahi Community Center, 171 N. Pauahi St.

Street closures during the city's Electric Light Parade on Dec. 7 were a major inconvenience for residents and businesses in the area, and the board wants to make sure closures are better coordinated.


Lanakila units hire director

Karen Cavalieri has been named the new director of the Lanakila Adult Day Services and Meals on Wheels programs.

Cavalieri was the owner of K.I. Staff Associates Inc., a temporary healthcare and clerical service provider before joining Lanakila.

"Karen's experience will be invaluable to Lanakila as we continue to expand and improve both our adult day services and Meals on Wheels programs," said Laura Colbert, president and chief executive officer of Lanakila.

Story Time at Kapolei Library

The new Kapolei Library will host three half-hour Story Time programs next month for preschoolers ages 3 and older.

The three programs, Jan. 6, 13 and 27, all will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the library's Children's Room.

The first program will be conducted by Janet Yap, who heads the state library's Edna Allyn Room for Children; the second program by Liane Watanuki, children's librarian at the Wai'anae Public Library; and the last program by Joyce Felmet, children's librarian at the Pearl City Public Library.

Forum looks at elderly injuries

The second statewide conference on helping older people avoid serious injuries in falls will be held Jan. 16 and 17 at the Naniloa Resort Hotel in Hilo, Hawai'i.

Falls are a leading cause of injury deaths among people older than 65.

Registration fee is $20 for the Jan. 16 morning session and also $20 for the afternoon session that day.
