Health Center to quiz director

The board of directors of the Waimanalo Health Center will meet tonight at 6 to allow its executive director an opportunity to answer allegations about misuse of money and mismanagement lodged against her this month.

Kawahine Kamakea-Ohelo, one of the center's founding members, was placed on leave without pay following allegations brought before the board Dec. 5.

She was given 10 days to respond, then was given an extension. Chairman Peter Kama said the board hopes to resolve the situation tonight.

Sen. Fred Hemmings said it is alleged that Kamakea-Ohelo mistreated employees and abused the center's charge card.

Outdoor Circle honors member

The Kane'ohe Outdoor Circle planted a rainbow shower tree recently to honor one of its members for three decades of consistent and supportive service to the organization.

Edna Shoup of Kahalu'u twice held the office of president for the group, headed the garden circle committee, chaired the Green Thumb Festival at the library and helped organize the club's Japanese tea ceremony program.

Shoup remains an active volunteer in the community, including with the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters and KEY Project.

The shower tree was planted at Kane'ohe District Park along the fence near the parking lot and is marked with a plaque.

Karting Club to offer clinic

The Pacific Karting Club will host a free karting clinic led by professional driver Memo Gidley in January

The Annual Memo Gidley Karting Clinic will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 4 and 5 in the Windward Mall parking lot, Haiku Road and Alaloa Street.

Classroom instruction is open to the public, but on-track instruction is limited to club members who own go-karts and pay a $25 insurance fee.

Gidley started racing go-carts in 1992 and worked his way up to Indy cars in 1999. He also raced the Champ Car World Series and was crowned Shifter Kart USA National Champion in November 1999.

House debate to air Sunday

A videotaped debate that aired last week between two of the leading Democratic candidates for the 2nd Congressional District race covering rural O'ahu and the Neighbor Islands will be televised at 5 p.m. Sunday and 6 p.m. Thursday on 'Olelo Channel 54.

U.S. Rep. Ed Case and state Sen. Colleen Hanabusa discussed key issues of the campaign.

A total of 44 candidates are running in a special election to be held Jan. 4 to fill the late Patsy Mink's seat in the 108th Congress.
