Authorities on Kaua'i reported the drowning of a father and his teenage son yesterday afternoon at Marine Camp Beach between Hanama'ulu and Wailua in Nukoli'i.

Details were sketchy as of yesterday evening, but it appeared that the father and son, who were visiting from the Mainland, got into trouble in choppy waters.

"According to witnesses, one of the victims got in trouble in the water and the other one swam out to help him," said Teddy Williams, acting battalion chief for the Kaua'i Fire Department.

After receiving a 911 call shortly before 1 p.m., firefighters and rescue workers proceeded to 4330 Kaua'i Beach Drive where they found two people in the ocean — the 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son. The two were pulled from the water and given cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The father was pronounced dead at the scene. The son was taken by ambulance to Wilcox Hospital while still being given CPR. According to police, the son either died en route to the hospital or shortly thereafter.
