Search resumes for missing hiker

Police, state Department of Land & Natural Resources personnel and fire rescue specialists resumed searching the hills off Old Pali Road early today for a 78-year-old Pearl City man who did not return from a hike yesterday.

The man, whom police identified as George Y. Morishima, is known to go off trail to gather edible bamboo shoots, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

The search began at 6:15 a.m. today. Firefighters had searched up to 10:15 p.m. yesterday.

Four DLNR, six police officers with two search dogs and 12 firefighters were involved in today's search, Soo said.

Morishima's car was found parked near the trail.

Man arrested after shooting

Homicide investigators today planned to question a 26-year-old man arrested yesterday in Nanakuli about a fatal shooting early Saturday at Ala Wai Community Park.

Police arrested the man, who has no permanent local address, on the 87-1600 block of Farrington Highway at 8:35 a.m., about 32 hours after the shooting occurred.

The medical examiner’s office is not releasing the name of the 37-year-old victim, who was shot in the face, until his identity is confirmed by fingerprints.

Gun recovered in club incident

Police recovered a .357-caliber revolver on Pier 3 Access Road, where a 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting at two soldiers, ages 22 and 21, at a North Nimitz Highway nightclub.

Witnesses and special duty officers chased down the gunman, who fired several shots at a car parked outside the World Cafe at 1130 N. Nimitz Highway at 3:57 a.m. The shooting suspect was arrested on two counts of attempted second-degree murder and firearm offenses.

Suspect sought in kidnap of woman

Police are seeking a 30-year-old man who allegedly lured a 21-year-old woman from Japan to accompany him to Detroit, where she was forced into prostitution. The woman was reported missing by her family Dec. 18. She was found with the help of Detroit police and has returned to Japan.

Honolulu police have classified the case as a kidnapping. The suspect's identity is known to police.

Man indicted in accident released

A 32-year-old Kaimuki man indicted for allegedly leaving the scene of a pedestrian accident Jan. 28 on Pahoa Avenue and Luawai Street was released after posting $11,000 bail. Sean Hashimoto is charged with failure to render aid and is scheduled to appear at Circuit Court Thursday.

The victim was a 73-year-old pedestrian.

Police also arrested a 23-year-old man at the Halawa Correctional Facility in connection with a hit-and-run collision Nov. 17 in Waipahu.

Liquid chlorine release probed

State Hazardous Evaluation & Emergency Response investigators are checking on a liquid chlorine release today on Kapa'a Quarry Road.

The release of the liquid chlorine from a pool-cleaning business was reported at 7:15 a.m. and forced the evacuation of one nearby business.

Man arrested in robbery, kidnap

Jay Young Kwon was arrested last night in Pearl City on a $100,000 warrant charging him with first-degree robbery and kidnapping. The charges stem from a Nov. 28 armed robbery of a 55-year-old owner of a Honolulu-area massage business.

Kwon, 37, is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Pouvi Savea, 36, was charged on Dec. 6 in the same "strong-arm" robbery of the Kapi'olani Boulevard massage business, police said.

Kwon is also a suspect in a Dec. 6 jewelry store robbery on Ke'eaumoku Street.
