Dolphin takes turn for worse

Advertiser Staff

A sick baby dolphin rescued on Christmas Day was in guarded condition today, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The 4-month-old, 30-pound spotted female dolphin looked as if it was improving yesterday but that changed about 2:30 a.m. today. Officials today said the dolphin's "condition became critical."

The dolphin, which is suffering from severe pneumonia, is being treated at the Marine Mammal Research rehabilitation facility at Marine Corps Base, Hawai'i.

Veterinarians are using antibiotics to treat the pneumonia.

Divers found the dolphin at Poka'i Bay in Wai'anae.
