Punahou Carnival need not be chaotic experience

Riders get a stomach-turning thrill on a ride at the Punahou Carnival. The fun begins today at the school's campus.

Ten things you should know about the Punahou Carnival, opening a two-day run at the school, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today and Saturday:
  1. Admission is free.
  2. The malassadas are still only one scrip each.
  3. Music will be plentiful, with a mix of alumni acts and music-industry favorites. Among the performers today — the Punahou Jazz Band at noon, Kualoa at 5 p.m., Pipeline at 7 p.m., Crosspoint at 8 p.m.; Saturday — Punahou Jazz Band at noon, Punahou Glee Club at 3 p.m., Barry Flanagan, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Ernie Cruz at 7 p.m.
  4. E.K. Fernandez's midway rides and games offer the usual skill tests and thrills.
  5. For green thumbers, the Plant Booth is a garden of delights.
  6. More than 200 artists, new and established, have created 2,000 items for sale at the carnival art gallery.
  7. There will be travel and vacation packages, jewelry, electronics and more at the auction Saturday in Cornuelle Lecture Hall in the Punahou Science Center. Doors open at 4 p.m.
  8. For the wee set, a Kiddieland provides pint-sized attractions geared for the very young.
  9. Kau kau ranges from Portuguese bean soup to Hawaiian plates, from chili to nachos, from Greek gyros to burgers.
  10. Parking is free on campus (enter via the Nehoa Street gate and upper campus entrance); paid parking is available at Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St.; Central Union Church, Beretania and Punahou streets; Maryknoll School, Wilder Avenue; St. Clement's Episcopal Church, 1515 Wilder. Or catch buses 4, 5 or 18, which stop nearby.
