Boating class scheduled to start

The Auxiliary Flotilla 1-14 of Kane'ohe will have a boating course beginning Monday.

The classes, which will be Monday and Thursday evenings at Kalaheo High School, will run through March 21. The classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The course is certified and meets U.S. Coast Guard and state and national boating law administrator's requirements.

Upon certification, participants will be eligible for boat insurance discounts, a free one-year membership in Boat/U.S. and discounts on marine safety products.

The course will cover: federal equipment requirements; boat handling; navigational aids; federal navigation rules; coastal navigation; radio communications; engines; knots and lines; and weather.

The classes are free and open to anyone. There is a charge for the manual, student study guide and exams. The cost is $40 for those who register before the class begins. The fee goes up to $45 for students who register at the door.

The class is limited to the first 40 students.

HUNTER SAFETY

• Free classes: The Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources is offering free hunting education classes at the Wai'anae Public Library and at Nimitz Business (1130 N. Nimitz Highway, No. A-151).

The Wai'anae classes will be today from 5:45 to 10:15 p.m. and tomorrow from 7:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Nimitz classes will be Feb. 15 from 5:45 to 9:30 p.m. and Feb. 16 from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
