Hikers rescued in Makaha

Firefighters yesterday rescued two stranded hikers in the hills mauka of Farrington Highway and the Makau Street beach loop subdivision in Makaha.

A Makau Street resident heard yelling, spotted the hikers and called the fire department at 8:44 a.m. Rescue crews moved to Kea'au Beach Park to have better access to the hikers, said Capt. Kenison Tejada, fire department spokesman.


Home destroyed in Big Island fire

Fire destroyed a home Thursday in Kailua, Kona, a blaze that may have been caused by a malfunctioning TV set.

Seven firefighter units responded to the 12:28 p.m. alarm, at 77-6516 Seaview Circle. The first unit arrived at 12:35 p.m.

The fire was extinguished at 1:30 p.m. The occupants, a 21-year-old woman and her 4-year-old brother, escaped unharmed.


Police search for Kaka'ako burglars

Police are looking for tips leading to the arrest of a man who burglarized a Kaka'ako photography studio on Jan. 20.

The burglar entered the Keely Luke Photography studio at 627 South St., Suite 101, by breaking the front door, police said. He took camera and computer equipment.

The burglar is believed to have left the area with an accomplice in a late-model silver sport utility vehicle.

The man was described as in his 40s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds, with a medium build, and salt-and-pepper hair, police said. He had a medium complexion with pock marks and noticeably crooked front-row teeth. He wore a black pullover short-sleeved shirt, black sweat pants and athletic shoes.

Family reports missing woman

The family of a missing 37-year-old Kaimuki woman who was last seen Jan. 20 has asked police to help find her.

Tracy Mieko Tominaga has not contacted her family and has not reported to work, police said.

Tominaga is 5 feet 3, 120 pounds with a slim build. She has a fair complexion, brown eyes and brown shoulder-length hair.
