Creating a climate suitable for a reindeer
By Eileen Sakoda, Honolulu
"A real (rein) deer with antlers" was 4-year-old Kylie's answer when Santa asked her what she wanted Santa to bring her. I'm not sure what Santa's response was, but when I asked her if she wanted something else, her reply was always no.
Christmas day arrived, and Kylie did not find a deer under the tree, but found in her stocking a reindeer beanie toy and a note, which I read to her.
"Dear Kylie, I thought and thought a lot about giving you a reindeer, because I know you would take good care of him, but reindeer can't live in Hawai'i because they need cold weather. So, I'm very sorry that I can't give you one, but I hope you like the other presents I brought you. Love, Santa."
Kylie looked sad for a moment. Then a smile lit her face as she told us, "But, Mommy, you can turn on the air conditioner."
