University of Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang, the nation's total offense leader until an injury ended his season, has been granted a medical hardship from the Western Athletic Conference, UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said.

Chang will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Chang suffered the injury to his right wrist against Rice Sept. 29 when he landed awkwardly after being tackled.

Chang underwent surgery in Los Angeles last month to repair ligament damage.

Dr. Darryl Kan, the team's surgeon, said Chang will be restricted from throwing a football for at least four months.

Chang started and played in three games in 2001. Before his injury, Chang led the nation in total offense, averaging 349.7 yards per game. He already is sixth on UH's career passing list with 4,141 yards.

Also granted another year is defensive back Leonard Peters, who did not play in 2001. Peters will have four years of eligibility remaining.
