'Aiea beats Kailua in OIA boys' tourney

'AIEA The 'Aiea High School boys basketball team withstood a third-period rally by Kailua and the loss of two starters in the final quarter to win, 72-57, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association first-round playoff action last night.
Na Ali'i (9-2) advance to tonight's quarterfinals against OIA East No. 2 seed Kaimuki (8-2) at Kalaheo. 'Aiea, the West's No. 3 seed, may be without the services of starting point guard Chris Antonio, who sprained his left ankle at the end of the third period last night and did not return. Na Ali'i coach Rodney Cavaco said Antonio was to have X-rays on the ankle to make sure it is just a sprain.
Another starter, forward Anthony Johnson, fouled out with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter. That and Antonio's injury capped a tough third period for 'Aiea in which it made only two field goals and was outscored 13-5. Fortunately for Na Ali'i, they had built a 47-28 halftime lead and still had a 52-41 advantage after three quarters.
Lamont Williams helped put the game away for 'Aiea by scoring Na Ali'i's first eight points of the fourth period, and Wes Williams' 3-pointer gave them a 63-50 lead with three minutes left.
Williams, a senior forward, scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the final quarter.
"He took over the game," Cavaco said. "He looks at what the team needs, and he saw that he needed to score in the fourth quarter."
