Kaimuki holds off 'Aiea, 52-49

Practice time at the free-throw line paid off for the Kaimuki Bulldogs, whose clutch free-throw shooting proved to be the difference in a 52-49 victory over the 'Aiea Na Ali'i in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball quarterfinal game last night at Mililani High School.

In another quarterfinal game, Mililani defeated Roosevelt, 73-57. Kaimuki (9-2) plays at Mililani (11-0) and Castle (9-3) travels to Kalaheo (11-0) in the semifinals Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Last night, the Bulldogs made 9 of 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

"We've been a good free-throw team throughout the year," said Kaimuki coach Stephen Lee. "We've been working on them during practice, and tonight it showed."

The Bulldogs (9-2) held a 41-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Kaimuki's first and only field goal in the fourth quarter came with 1:28 remaining and gave the Bulldogs a three-point lead, 50-47. Two free throws by 'Aiea's Lamont Williams cut the Bulldogs' lead to one, and a Bulldog turnover gave Na Ali'i a chance to take the lead.

A missed jump shot by Wes Williams and a scramble for a rebound with 18 seconds left resulted in a held ball, with the possession arrow in Kaimuki's favor. On the inbounds pass with 16 seconds remaining, another held ball was called, giving the ball back to 'Aiea.

An errant Na Ali'i pass turned the ball back over to Kaimuki with 10 seconds on the clock, forcing 'Aiea to foul. Jimmy Miyasaka sank two free throws, giving the Bulldogs a 52-49 lead.

Lamont Williams raced down the court with eight seconds left and threw up a 3-point attempt that bounced off the rim of the basket.

"We played hard the whole way through but we just collapsed in the end," said Lamont Williams, who finished with 20 points. "We tried to come back — we tried and tried, and we got there but we just couldn't finish the game."

Said 'Aiea coach Rodney Cavaco: "It was a tough game. Everyone expected it to be tough and close, and it was. We had our chance to win and we didn't execute, and it's that simple."

Despite trailing 22-17 at halftime, the Bulldogs outscored Na Ali'i 24-12 in the third quarter, behind Daniel Tautofi, who scored nine, and James Davis, who added eight.

"It was a great game — it went back and forth. 'Aiea took control in the first half, and the second half we played our game," said Lee. "Coming down the stretch it could have gone any way, and we are happy with the victory."

Davis led the Bulldogs with 17 points, and Tautofi and Miyasaka added 15 each.

The game got off to a late start, because Kaimuki's bus arrived at 3:45 p.m., 45 minutes after its scheduled arrival time.

"I don't know if that had anything to do with us coming out flat. We weren't ready from the beginning," Lee said.

With their wins today, Mililani, Kaimuki, Kalaheo and Castle will receive the OIA's four berths to the state tournament.

Mililani 73, Roosevelt 57: The Trojans dominated the Rough Riders, running out to a 31-18 halftime lead that they would never relinquish.

Rashaun Broadus, who was held to five points at the half, scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a dunk that came off a steal.

Nine different Trojans scored in the game, led by Broadus with 19. Kaipo Patoc, who recently signed with the University of Hawai'i football team, scored 17.

Andrew Choy scored a team-high 13 for the Rough Riders and Keola Stitzel added 12.

Kalaheo 61, Kaiser 40: Ikaika Alama-Francis lead all-scorers with 27 points as the host Mustangs broke away after leading by just a point (23-22) at halftime.

SWIMMING

OIA: Kaiser senior Ashley Swart broke a 16-year-old meet record in the 500-yard freestyle at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association trials yesterday at Kalani High.

Swart, who has signed with University of San Diego, was timed in 5 minutes, 0.01 seconds, 78/100ths of a second faster than the record set by Nadine Takai of Pearl City in 1986.

Swimming finals in the championship meet will be held today at Kalani, starting at 2 p.m.

Swart also holds the OIA 200 individual medley record of 2:07.43, but was the second fastest qualifier in that event yesterday. Christine Phillips of Kalaheo was first at 2:18.92.

Swart is defending state champion in both events.

Two boys and two girls were leading qualifiers in two events in yesterday's trial heats. Kaiser's Evan-Duffin Barnes was fastest in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and Roosevelt's Joey Albarico was No. 1 in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Radford's Stella Karoly-Brinich qualified first in the girls 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke while Kalaheo's Maria Krawciw was fastest in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Kaiser and Kalani emerged as top contenders for today's championship in girls while the boys meet appears to be among Kaiser, Roosevelt, Kapolei and Mililani.

ILH: Iolani's boys are seeded first in 10 of 12 events and threaten records in three at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu swimming championships today at the Kamehameha Schools.

Events begin at 2 p.m.

The girls meet shapes up as a close battle between Iolani and Punahou.

Entering with faster times this season than the boys' meet records are Iolani's 200-yard medley relay team (1:37.14 to 1:37.95); the Raiders' 200 freestyle relay team (1:27.06, more than four seconds faster than Iolani's own record of 1:31.73); and Iolani sophomore Mark Eckert in the 200 freestyle (1:42.66 to the record 1:43.01 held by Noa Sakamoto of Punahou, who is seeded second).

Notably missing from the competition will be Punahou senior Nick Borreca, who set or helped set four records at last year's state championships. Borreca is ill with mononucleosis, a Punahou official said.

Iolani's nationally ranked junior, Hongzhe Sun, is seeded first in the boys' 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle.
