Avilla hit 4-of-7 3-point attempts and 1-of-2 free throws.

The game was tied at 24 at halftime, but the Sea Warriors went on a 31-12 run to open the second half and take a commanding 55-36 lead.

Alexus Foyle led the Seasiders with 17 points. Scott Salisbury added nine points and 14 rebounds.

HPU improved to 14-6 overall and 5-3 in the PacWest. BYUH dropped to 13-8, 4-4.

SOFTBALL

UH takes two: Junior Sheri Oronoz and freshman Shannon Tabion each pitched strong outings as Hawai'i took both games on the opening day of the Aztec Invitational Softball Tournament yesterday in San Diego.

Oronoz (2-1) allowed three runs, six hits and two walks in seven innings in a 4-3 win against host San Diego State, ranked 23rd in the nation.

Tabion (1-1) scattered nine hits and two walks, while striking out five to beat Missouri, 3-1, in the second game.

The Rainbows improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the tournament. They will play the same two teams today (Missouri at 9:30 a.m. and San Diego State at noon, both HST) before returning home tomorrow night.

"Very big," UH coach Bob Coolen said of the win against the nationally ranked Aztecs (3-3). "We got on top early and held on the rest of the way."

In both games, the Rainbows took advantage of their opponents' errors. In UH's two-run second inning against SDSU, both runs were unearned. In the second game, all three of UH's runs were unearned.

Hawai'i's Stacie Hirono batted a combined 5-for-6 in the two games.

HPU, Augustana canceled: The doubleheader between Augustana (S.D.) and Hawai'i Pacific at HPU Windward field was canceled because of rain.

HPU, BYUH postponed: Today's doubleheader between Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific at HPU Windward field was postponed.

The games, which will be rescheduled, were the Pacific West Conference openers for both teams.
