UH softball team wins Aztec tourney

Kate Judd had five RBIs in two games to back strong pitching by Melissa Coogan and Sheri Oronoz as Hawai'i beat San Diego State, 4-0, and Missouri, 5-1, to capture the Aztec Invitational Softball Tournament yesterday in San Diego.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-3) won all four games of the three-team tournament.

In the opener, Judd slammed a two-run home run in a three-run sixth. She was 2-for-3 in the game in backing Coogan's complete-game, two-hitter. Coogan (1-0) walked two and struck out two.

In the second game, Judd drove in three runs. Judd and Natalie Gonzales led the Rainbows with two hits apiece.

Oronoz (3-1) scattered seven hits and allowed a run in seven innings, while striking out three.

The Rainbows return home for their annual Chevron Paradise Classic, which starts Thursday.

• Vulcans split doubleheader: Kristine Kahoalii pitched a six-hitter to lead the Hawai'i-Hilo softball team to a 3-1 victory over Cal State-Stanislaus for a split of a doubleheader at UHH Softball Field yesterday.

CS-Stanislaus won the opener, 5-4.

Kahoalii struck out six and walked none in a complete-game performance.

In the second game, the Warriors trailed 4-1 before scoring four runs in the seventh inning.

Nikki Moore and Rachelle Verhoeven hit homers for Stanislaus. Abby Padasdao was 3-for-3, including a two-run home run, a double and three RBIs for Hilo.
