Iolani boys, Punahou girls roll to ILH swimming championships

Iolani's boys won all 11 events and set or tied records in six of them yesterday en route to a crushing victory in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu private-school swimming championships.

The Raiders scored 130 points to second-place and former perennial champion Punahou's 53 in the meet at the Kamehameha Schools.

The only event the Iolani boys did not win was diving, which was held on Friday.

Punahou won the girls championship, outscoring Iolani 102.5 to 82.5 in a meet that saw 23- and 22-year-old records broken.

Hongzhe Sun, Iolani's nationally ranked junior, was involved in four boys records. He broke his own 100-yard butterfly record with a time of 50.08 seconds, tied the 500 freestyle record of 4:35.41 and swam on relay teams that set new records in the 400 freestyle and 200 medley.

"My times were not personal bests, but the team had a great, awesome day," Sun said. "We just went in trying to do our best and came out winning all the events. We didn't expect that."

Iolani sophomore Mark Eckert and the Raiders' 200 freestyle relay team also broke records. Eckert swam a record 1:41.79 in the 200 freestyle and was a member of two record-setting relay teams.

Punahou senior Kristin Simu-novich broke the 100 freestyle record set in 1979 by Punahou's Kathy Shipman with a time of 53.58 and Iolani senior Kim Ono erased the 100 backstroke record set in 1980 by Ka'ili Chun with a time of 58.85.

The other girls meet records were by Punahou in the 200 freestyle relay and by Iolani in the 200 medley relay.
