UH advances in water polo tourney

The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team won two matches yesterday to advance to championship pool play at the UC San Diego Arena No Grip Invitational at San Diego, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-1) defeated host UC San Diego, 8-4. Karin Van Hoff, Chelsea Garner- Prohs and Makana Whitford each had two goals for UH. Tessa Curti and Beth Novick also had goals for the Rainbow Wahine.

Garner-Prohs had four goals in UH's 8-3 victory over Indiana. Indiana took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, but Hawai'i scored two goals in the second quarter and three in the third quarter while shutting down the Hoosiers. Van Hoff, Lissy Schweitzer, Darcy Scott-Hosaka and Margaret Gnadt also scored for UH.

Hawai'i plays Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount today.


QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Sing Chow, McIntyre honored: Leo Sing Chow, Kamehameha Schools softball pitcher, and Mike McIntyre, guard for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team, were named the Honolulu Quarterback Club's female and male sports persons for January.

They will be honored at the club's meeting tomorrow at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Leo Sing Chow led the Warriors to the state title with 13 wins and no losses.

McIntyre, a reserve, helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to the top of the Western Athletic Conference, three times leading the team in scoring.


TRACK AND FIELD

• Smith second: Hawai'i's Cheryl Smith finished second in the women's 3,000-meter run at the University of Washington Invitational indoor meet at Seattle yesterday.

Smith finished in 9 minutes, 46.30 seconds. Margaret Butler, a former University of Washington athlete, was first in 9:38.57. Hawai'i's Alethe West was sixth (9:58.51) and Casey McGuire-Turcotte ninth (10:04.44).
