Guilty plea entered in license fraud

A former driver's license examiner working at the Kailua-Kona police station has pleaded guilty in District Court for issuing fraudulent licenses to illegal aliens who paid him for the cards.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 21 in the case of Clayton C. Perreira, who entered his guilty plea Feb. 5.

Big Island police said yesterday that the investigation began in December 2000, when they received a tip that illegal aliens were being issued licenses for money. Detectives found discrepancies among Perreira's licensing transactions and determined that in 17 cases, Perreira had charged illegal aliens $500-$800 for a Hawai'i driver's license.

On Dec. 8, 2000, Perreira was placed on leave; he resigned more than a year later, on Jan. 25.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, told police he had taken his 2-year-old daughter away from his girlfriend because she was intoxicated.

The girlfriend , who has legal custody of the child, left and returned with her brother, 18, and father, 43. The victim and his mother told the men to stay out, but they broke through the door and punched the victim several times. The child was returned to her mother.

Robbery leads to drug arrests

Three people were arrested yesterday when marijuana plants were found at their Hale'iwa home — a discovery police made while investigating an unrelated robbery.

The case began about 7:40 a.m. yesterday when a Caucasian man in his 20s was seen stealing items from a car that a Japanese tourist had parked at Ali'i Beach Park.

The tourist confronted the robber, who assaulted him and then fled in a pickup truck.

Police went to the home of the truck's registered owner and found the marijuana. Two men and a woman were arrested for first-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. No arrests were made in connection with the robbery.

The robber is described as 6 feet tall, 280 pounds, with dark hair and a goatee, wearing a white shirt and tan shorts.
