Want to help send a bunch of hard-working UH student jazz musicians to perform in a prestigious Mainland jazz festival?

Jazz Ensemble Valentine's Day Concert

• 8 p.m. tomorrow, Musicians' Association Building

• $8, $5 students; 623-1592

Go to the University of Hawai'i Jazz Ensemble's Valentine's Day fund-raising concert.

The ensemble was one of eight similar college-level musician groups nationwide recently invited to participate in the 44th Annual University of Notre Dame Intercollegiate Jazz Festival on March 1. Held in South Bend, Ind., the event is one of the nation's oldest and most distinguished collegiate jazz festivals. The fund-raiser will help defray some costs of the trip.

The trip will be the first time the UH Jazz Ensemble has traveled to the Mainland to perform in such an event in more than two decades.

"Our selection is indeed high praise for the talent of our UH students, and it will further add to our growing national reputation," said ensemble director Patrick Hennessey.

The concert will be held at the Musicians' Association Building at 949 Kapi'olani Blvd. A tax-deductible donation will be collected at the door.

Guest artists will include saxophonist Tim Tsukiyama, trumpeters Gary Chun and Rick Broadwell and trombonist Brien Matson.

The UH Jazz Ensemble stages a number of UH and community-based performances each year, including appearances at the annual Kamehameha Schools Jazz Showcase and the Hawaii International Jazz Festival.
