Law, arts owe much to J. Russell Cades

Much has been written, justifiably, about the contribution of J. Russell Cades, who died Saturday at 97, to the legal profession in Hawai'i. He was a towering figure in an important profession.

But Cades also was a major philanthropist, to the great benefit of the arts and humanities in Hawai'i. The Cades Foundation, endowed by Cades and his brother, Milton, distributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to deserving organizations.

Important arts endeavors in Honolulu, such as the Honolulu Symphony, the Manoa Valley Theater and the Honolulu Academy of Arts, were beneficiaries.

He also was involved in cooperative efforts with his law firm to sponsor such worthy enterprises as our local public radio and television stations.

Hawai'i will miss him.
