Zippy's back at old site

Zippy's new restaurant in Kane'ohe opened Tuesday at its old location next to the post office.

The former building was razed last year at the same site.

Some employees from the Zippy's at William Henry Road, which was set up while the new building was erected, were transferred to the new restaurant.

That restaurant will remain open for the time being, an employee said.

Event to help Nepal school

Schoolchildren in Lumbini, Nepal, sit on a concrete floor for lack of classroom furniture, but Lanikai resident Zelia Robinson wants to change that.

For $3,060, she said, she can buy benches and tables for nine classrooms, 10 chairs and desks for teachers and 33 windows to keep the winter draft out of classrooms.

Robinson said she would raise the money through a benefit performance of Kathak dance, storytelling and north Indian classical music at 7:30 Saturday at Orvis Auditorium, University of Hawai'i. A $10 donation is suggested for adults, $6 for seniors and students.

For information or reservations, call 263-3383.

Two rescued on school hike

A Fire Department helicopter rescued a seventh-grade Kapolei Middle School teacher and a 12-year-old student after they were injured on a hiking excursion on the 'Aiea Loop Trail yesterday morning.

The teacher, 43, broke her right ankle about three-quarters into the 4-mile trail and the student sprained her ankle halfway up the trail, according to Capt. Richard Soo, Fire Department spokesman.

Fire rescue crews received the call for the injured student at 10:44 a.m. A call for the injured teacher came in at 11:08 a.m. The trail was wet because of recent rains, but the hike is not considered a difficult one, Soo said.

The teacher and student were airlifted from the hiking trail, and then taken to the Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi, Soo said. The student was treated and released, and the teacher requested that no information be released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

More than 100 seventh-grade students and chaperones from Kapolei Middle School were hiking the 'Aiea Loop Trail yesterday, Soo said. Military from Camp Smith also helped in the rescue, Soo said.
