Youths to discuss global warming

The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council will hold a statewide high school conference on global warming Saturday at Tokai University and Sunday at the Ala Wai Watershed.

The 2002 Youth Advisory Conference to the Kyoto Protocol will include 120 public and private school students from O'ahu, Maui and Kaua'i.

Students will take on the roles of international delegates engaged in the climate-change talks and be expected to make inroads where the real Kyoto Protocol has stalled.

Sunday, students will help the Ala Wai Watershed Association clean up the watershed.

At the end of Saturday's negotiations, students will develop a Hawai'i youth proposal that will be submitted to the chairman of the Kyoto Protocol talks.

Scholarships await juniors

O'ahu high school juniors who plan to pursue a four-year degree in any business or professional field of study can apply for the 2002 Executive Women International Scholarship.

The scholarships, which are $3,500 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,500 for third place, are given by the Honolulu Chapter of Executive Women. The scholarships are open to male and female students.

Applications are due March 6 and can be obtained from high school counselors.

Kawaiaha'o Walk-A-Thon set

Kawaiaha'o Montessori School will hold its 11th annual Walk-A-Thon on Saturday at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park.

Students from Kawaiaha'o preschools and elementary school, their families and school alumni will participate in the event, which will feature activities along the paths.

Parents and supporters of the school will entertain the children with live music, games, inflatable trampolines, face-painting, food and prizes.

The Walk-A-Thon is Kawaiaha'o's only fund-raiser.

Organizers hope to raise $25,000 to help with continuing education for teachers and aides, as well as the repair and maintenance of the campus.

There is no cost to register.

For more information on the Walk-A-Thon, call the school at 585-0622.
