Georgia Tech golfers leading at Waikoloa

Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson and Oregon's Aaron Byers both shot 5-under-par 67s yesterday to tie for the lead in the first round of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate at Waikoloa's King Course on the Big Island.

Jonathan Echols of Fresno State is second at 68.

Adam Hagen of host Hawai'i-Hilo shot a 71 to tie for 13th, and Norman-Ganin Asao, of UH-Manoa, is tied for 23rd at 72.

Georgia Tech leads the 24-team field with a four-man team aggregate score of 281. Stanford is second at 285, followed by Mississippi (286), Pepperdine (287) and UNLV and Fresno State, both at 288.

UH-Hilo is tied for 17th with Texas A&M at 296, and UH-Manoa is tied for 22nd with UC-Santa Barbara at 301.


BASEBALL

• UCLA beats UH-Hilo, 9-1: Chris Jensen had three hits and drove in three runs, and Billy Susdorf had two hits and three RBIs to lead UCLA to a 9-1 victory over the University of Hawai'i-Hilo last night at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

David Johnson allowed no runs on one hit in five innings to earn the victory. Three relievers finished up, allowing a run on four hits as the Bruins improved to 6-3.

Robert Shimabuku gave up five runs on six hits in taking the loss for the Vulcans, who fell to 1-19-1.


TENNIS

• HPU men sweep: The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, beat Abilene Christian (Texas), 9-0, yesterday at the Kailua Racquet Club to improve to 4-1 on the season.

HPU junior Blaz Jurjec remains undefeated in both doubles and singles this season.
