THE LEFT LANE
Calling all Elvises

Wanted: A few good Elvis look-alikes.

Purpose: To answer telephones for Hawai'i Public Television's membership drive.

You don't have to sing, but you do have to provide your own regalia, from wig to sequined costume to bejeweled belt. It helps if you can say "Thank you very much," in Presley-like tones. Swivel hips are optional.

The Elvis clones are needed from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 14. Prospects are asked to call volunteer coordinator Lia Salza, at 973-1375. The membership drive runs March 2-17.

Photo opportunity

The best seller "Something to Remember Me By," a children's book about a bond between a granddaughter and grandmother, has inspired a photo contest that encourages adults and children as young as 8 to enter.

The theme is "Love Across Generations," and photos must be a displayed on a single scrapbook page, maximum size 12 inches square.

The grand prize is a Lane cedar chest filled with a Canon PowerShot digital camera and photo printer, and a one-year subscription and books from Memory Makers magazine. Ten runner-up prizes are $100 gift certificates from Books Are Fun. The deadline is Feb. 28.

For details and contest rules, visit somethingtoremembermeby.org or call (800) 772-7765.

Valentine spirit lives

While Valentine's Day has passed, the celebration continues this weekend:

  • Kindred Hearts Hawaii singles club is holding a party tonight with a theme stolen from a scene in HBO's "Sex & the City": Women are supposed to bring a man they aren't interested in (or a man can bring a woman he's not interested in) for a social gathering with an equal ratio of men to women.

The party begins at 7:30 p.m. at a home in Kahala. It costs $15 for Kindred Hearts members and $20 for non-members. The catch is you cannot arrive solo. Reservations: 524-2712.

Perfect people to invite: The guy who keeps asking you out who needs a subtle hint. Or your friend who won't shut up about being single.

  • The Bark Park is celebrating with a post-Valentine potluck at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Participants are asked bring a dish for human consumption and dress up their pups for a canine costume contest. Call 739-2515.

The dirty truth

Mom and the Soap and Detergent Association are in agreement: Wash your hands.

According to the association's latest National Cleaning Survey, about 40 percent of American workers don't wash their hands often or long enough.

According to the study, medical workers (86 percent) are more diligent about proper washing than construction workers (65 percent) or office and customer service workers (47 percent).

Rule of (clean) thumb: Wash hands thoroughly (soap and water for at least 15 seconds) at least five times a day.
