UCLA tops UH-Hilo, 9-4, sweeps short series

Wes Whisler pitched seven shutout innings yesterday as UCLA beat the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 9-4, at Simmons Field in Kailua-Kona.

The win capped a two-game series sweep by UCLA. The Bruins beat UH-Hilo, 9-1, on Wednesday.

Whisler gave up three hits and struck out five in picking up his first win of the season. UH-Hilo's Jason Castro (1-3) lasted just 3á innings, giving up eight hits and six runs.

Kaliko Oligo, with two singles, was the only Vulcan with more than one hit. The center fielder has 52 hits and a .347 batting average, both team highs.

Pepperdine (3-4) is up next for UH-Hilo (1-20-1). The teams will play single games today and Sunday, and a doubleheader tomorrow.


SOFTBALL

• HPU 1, BYUH 0: Mallory Anderson (1-0) tossed an extra-inning complete game as HPU improved to 3-2.

Brandy Choy Foo and Kim Fukumoto, who had the game-winning RBI in the top of the eighth inning, each had two hits for the Sea Warriors. BYUH dropped to 1-4.

• Chaminade 3, Claremont Mudd Scrip 2: Chaminade rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game and one more in the 10th to win its season opener.

Kaaihili Kelly held Claremont Mudd Scrip hitless for four innings, striking out four and walking two. Marquez Melissa pitched the final six innings for Chaminade.


GOLF

• Rowe leads: Stanford's Philip Rowe shot a 5-under 67 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the second round of the Taylor Made/ Waikoloa Intercollegiate at Waikoloa's King Course on the Big Island.

Rowe finished the first round two strokes behind co-leaders Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech and Aaron Byers of Oregon. Matteson was alone in second place after shooting a 70 yesterday; Byers dropped into a tie for fifth place after a 74.

Georgia continues to lead the 24-team field with a four-man team aggregate score of 566. Stanford is second at 573, followed by Nevada (575) and Mississippi and Kansas, both at 577.

The UH-Hilo (586) is tied for 14th with Southern California.

• Junior golf clinics: The Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association will sponsor a series of mental training clinics, Monday through next Friday, throughout the state.

The clinics, designed for junior golfers, parents, and coaches, will be conducted by Chris Dorris, who has worked with Olympic hopefuls and PGA Tour players.

Clinic fee is $30 for HSJGA members, and $40 for non-members, coaches and instructors. For information and registration, call the HSJGA office on O'ahu at 532-0559.


BASKETBALL

• MIL tournament: Brandon Chu scored 22 points, Kynana Metoyer 15 and Van Komatsu 14 as Maui topped Moloka'i, 64-41, in the MIL tournament at King Kekaulike Gym.

In the other tournament game last night, Adrian Lock sank four free throws to seal a 59-54 win by King Kekaulike over Seabury Hall. With the game tied 44-all in the fourth quarter, Adam Lock hit two 3-pointers to help Na Ali'i pull away.

SOCCER

• Is it in you?: Romy Trigg-Smith of the Punahou girl's team and Satoshi Mitsuda of the boy's squad, were announced as Gatorade's Hawai'i State High School Soccer Players of the Year.

The winners from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were selected by a panel of experts and a National Media Advisory Board, based on their accomplishments on and off the field.

Trigg-Smith maintains a 3.9 GPA and is part of the National Honor Society. She also won a Gatorade "Will to Win" award. Classmate Mitsuda carries a 3.66 GPA.

The two are automatic finalists for the National Boy's and Girl's Soccer Player of the Year Awards.


NFL

• Quarterback challenge: Six NFL quarterbacks, including Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, competed in the NFL Quarterback Challenge yesterday at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu'e, Kaua'i.

The made-for-television event will be aired this summer during the NFL preseason. The competition winner will be announced at that time.

Also competing were Aaron Brooks of the New Orleans Saints, Doug Flutie of the San Diego Chargers, Jeff Garcia of the San Francisco 49ers, Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts and Jake Plummer of the Arizona Cardinals.

The competition tested the quarterbacks' passing skills, based on speed and mobility, accuracy, and ability to hit fast-moving targets at varying distances.


ARENA FOOTBALL

• By invitation only: The Hawaiian Islanders Arena Football Team will conduct its second invitational tryouts tomorrow, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Only players invited by Hawaiian Islanders' coach Guy Benjamin will take part in the workout. The players are vying for spots on the team's 19-man active roster.
