Christian singer in new concert

Bob Fitts, the Christian singer from the Big Island who led last Thanksgiving's interfaith gathering at the Stan Sheriff Center, returns to O'ahu for a 7 p.m. concert March 9 at the Assembly of God Church, 3400 Moanalua Road.

Fitts serves as worship coordinator for Youth With a Mission at the University of the Nations in Kailua, Kona. A recording artist for Maranatha Music, Fitts is known for his Christian songs "He Is Lovely," "Take My Healing to the Nations," "The Lord Reigns" and "Highest Place."

Tickets, at $5, are available at the Giving Tree, Pearl City; Praise Him Christian Books, 'Aiea; and Showers of Blessings, Mililani; and at these churches: Ê Pearl City Community Church, New Hope/Pearl, Hope Chapel/

Holy Land visitor in lecture series

The Rev. Naim Ateek, canon at St. George's Cathedral in East Jerusalem and founder of the Jerusalem-based Sabeel Ecumenical Theology Center, will talk in March about ministering to the Palestinian community in a series of lectures titled "Justice and Only Justice: A Palestinian Liberation Theology."

He'll lecture on "The Bible and Zionism," at 7 p.m. March 4 at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave., and on "Establishing a Sure and Secure Peace in Palestine/ Israel" at 6:30 p.m. March 6 at the University of Hawai'i Art Auditorium.

All lectures are free and open to the public.

He'll also take part 10:30 a.m. March 3 at the Church of the Crossroads in the preaching and celebration of communion, and he'll give the homily at 7:30 p.m. March 3 at St. Andrew's Cathedral.

Retreat leader in free lecture

Lay missionary and writer Edwina Gateley will give a free lecture on "Social Justice and Mysticism: Our Challenge to Give Birth to God in the Contemporary World" at 4 p.m. Feb. 24 at Mystical Rose Oratory at St. Louis School/Chaminade Campus.

Gateley, a retreat leader and author, will also offer a workshop on "Spirituality for the New Millennium: Our Call to Personal and Global Transformation," from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday in the oratory. The attendance fee is $10 ($5 in advance).

After serving as a missionary in Africa, the British-born feminist theologian founded the Voluntary Missionary Movement to recruit people to work in developing countries. There are now VMM centers in England, Ireland, Scotland and the United States, sending more than 1,500 missionaries all over the world.
