HPU upsets Montana State, 84-81, in overtime

Nash Subotic scored 22 points and Zack Anderson had 10 points and 12 rebounds to help Hawai'i Pacific University to an 84-81 overtime win over PacWest Conference leader Montana State-Billings, last night at Mid-Pacific Institute Gym.
HPU, which led 40-32 at the half, outscored Montana State-Billings, 12-9 in the overtime period.
Leandro Maruoka added 11 points and Nick Spajic had 10 for HPU, which improved to 15-6, 6-3.
Dan Thompson paced Montana State-Billings (19-4, 9-3) with 23 points and Danny Phillips chipped in with 22.
BYUH 94, Western New Mexico 62: Alexus Foley scored a game-high 21 points to lead BYUH to the win last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Freshman point guard Yuta Tabuse had six of BYUH's 21 steals. Most of the steals led to fast-break dunks, boosting BYUH's shooting percentage to 59 percent.
BYUH (14-8, 5-4 PacWest) also had 34 assists in the game, the second-highest total in school history.
Western New Mexico fell to 1-17, 0-12.
BASEBALL
UH-Hilo edges Pepperdine: Daniel Lockett scattered five hits and Johnny Dudoit singled home the game's only run in the fifth inning as Hawai'i-Hilo edged Pepperdine, 1-0, yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.
Lockett (1-0) struck out five and walked two in going the distance.
The victory was just UH-Hilo's second of the season against 20 losses and one tie. Pepperdine, which beat then-No. 3 Tulane twice this month, fell to 3-5.
UH-Hilo's leading hitter, Kaliko Oligo opened the fifth with a single to right field off Pepperdine starter Brandon Boesch. After Darren Chu struck out, Oligo stole second and scored on Dudoit's single to right.
Boesch (1-1) allowed six hits and one run, and struck out six in five innings.
Chu, Keola Park and Chad Agustin each collected two hits for UH-Hilo.
The Vulcans and Pepperdine continue their four-game series with a doubleheader today at Old Kona Airport Field.
SOFTBALL
Rainbow Wahine split doubleheader: Stacey Porter went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs and Natalie Gonzales was 2-for-4 with one RBI as the University of Hawai'i blanked Mercer, 5-0, in the first of two Rainbow Wahine games last night, part of the 6th Chevron Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Wahine (7-4) dropped the second game, 4-2, to Long Beach State (11-4), despite another homer by Porter.
Melissa Coogan tossed a complete game in the opener against Mercer (4-9), allowing five hits and striking out three.
UH's Sheri Oronoz lasted just 4á innings in the second game, allowing seven hits and four runs, just one of them earned. Porter homered to left in the first inning.
SWIMMING
NCAA qualifiers: Juniors Konstantin Dubrovin and Kurt Boehm emerged as NCAA qualifiers last night at the Senior Meet at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Dubrovin earned the fastest team time and an NCAA "B" standard time of 1:38.56 in the 200 free. Boehm clocked in his first NCAA qualifying time of 1:47.13 in the 200 fly. Boehm went on to finish second in the 200 back and earned the team's fastest time at 1:54.65.
GYMNASTICS
Twister wins gold: Randi Lau of the Hawaiian Island Twisters won gold at the IGI Chicago Style meet Feb. 9 at the Historic Navy Pier in Chicago.
Lau, 7, beat more than 160 gymnasts in the 7-11-year age bracket.
