Pali Highway lanes to close

Two Honolulu-bound lanes of Pali Highway between Ahipu'u Street and Ahi Place will be closed Wednesday and Thursday for underground maintenance work.

The Gas Co. will be working on a utility pipeline and will close the right and middle lanes from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. During this time, the Kailua-bound left lane will be used as a contra-flow lane.

Motorists traveling toward town will not be allowed to make left turns onto Ahi Place or Ahipu'u Street. In the Kailua direction, left turns will be prohibited onto Laimi Road.

Fire damages Kane'ohe home

A fire caused when oil-soaked paper towels spontaneously began burning destroyed a two-story house at 45-218 Kokokahi Place in Kane'ohe early yesterday morning.

The two residents were awakened by the barking of one of their dogs just before 1:30 a.m., said fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Damage to the home and contents was estimated at $250,000, Tejada said.

"The female resident opened the sliding door to see what the dog was barking at," Tejada said. "She couldn't see anything, but she smelled some smoke. Then she saw a glow coming from the downstairs carport."

Tejada said the couple and their dogs escaped the house unharmed.

Tejada said firefighters determined that the blaze began when paper towels saturated with linseed oil and left in a plastic bucket in the carport ignited spontaneously. The couple had earlier used the towels for woodwork.

Air-race teams to raise money

Nearly 50 air racing teams from 19 states and five countries are participating in this weekend's Great Hawaiian Air Race, a 650-mile handicapped race from Honolulu International Airport to Hana and back to O'ahu's Dillingham Field.

The event for civilian aircraft is a benefit for Make-A-Wish Hawaii.

In one event, aircraft compete in a handicapped speed race. In another event, pilots see how close they can come to their estimated time and fuel consumption for the race route, and are also scored on the quality of their landings.

For more information, visit the event's Web site.
