Advertiser Staff

More than 22,000 runners, joggers and walkers are expected to participate in the 18th annual Great Aloha Run tomorrow.

The run will start at 7 a.m. from Aloha Tower at Bishop Street on Nimitz Highway and will finish in Aloha Stadium.

The fund-raising event covers 8.15 miles and features competitive wheelchair participants, elite runners, as well as the less competitive such as those pushing baby strollers.

More than $5.2 million have been raised and distributed to non-profit groups throughout the state by the Great Aloha Run.

The defending champions are Malcolm Campbell (men) and Suyuri Kusutani (women).

Campbell won the men's division last year for the fourth consecutive time, clocking 40 minutes, 30 seconds.

The 31-year-old native of Scotland lives in Atlanta, Ga., where he works as a computer technician.

Jonathan Lyau, winner of the 1994 race, was the first Hawai'i finisher last year, in 42:44.

Kusutani won last year's women's division in 49:01. Nina Christiansen was the first Hawai'i woman finisher, in 49:37.
