Hilo drops baseball pair with Pepperdine

Kamehameha Schools graduate Duke Sardinha batted 3 for 5 with a double, homer and four RBIs as Pepperdine routed Hawai'i-Hilo, 15-2, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Old Kona Airport Field.

The Waves also won the second game, 4-2.

Pepperdine broke open the first game with a five-run fifth and seven-run seventh.

Rock Mills, Cory Brightwell and Simon Ferrer each drove in three runs for the Waves.

In the second game, Pepperdine's Patrick Rooney batted 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Winner Derek Mills pitched a seven-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Both games were seven innings.

Pepperdine improved to 5-5. Hilo dropped to 2-22-1.


GOLF

• Hamamoto, Wilson share lead: Jarett Hamamoto, the boys high school state champion, and Dean Wilson shot 67s yesterday to share the first-round lead of the Hilo Invitational Tournament at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Hamamoto, a Waiakea High student, won the David S. Ishii State Championship last May 12 at the Ka'anapali Golf Course.

Wilson, a Kaneohe resident, competes on the Japan Golf Tour Organization.

John Lynch is at 68, and Kevin Hayashi, Matthew Ma and Gregory Meyer are at 69.

Today's final round will start at 7 a.m.
