Shoulder bags cater to women who carry everything

By Paula Rath

Women in World War II carried their gas masks in shoulder bags, which usually were made of canvas or other fabric.

A little-known fact: The shoulder bag got its start in World War II as a carrier for a gas mask. The then-innovative design enabled women involved in the war effort to keep their hands free for their important duties. The ubiquitous bags of the '40s were made of canvas or fabric, as all leather supplies were needed for the war.

Today, the shoulder bag is still a staple in the wardrobes of most women. However it is anything but dull in appearance, and it's designed to carry everything from cell phones to calculators and compacts.

The 21st century woman prefers a bag with a place for everything, so zippered pockets and sectionalized interiors are preferred. Shoulder straps are either short enough to be tucked under her arm or long enough to go across her body for added security.

For the coming season, we can expect to see shoulder bags fabricated with leather, nylon and microfiber, and embellished with bohemian fringe, embroidery and beads.
