Ex-UH regent Hung Wai Ching dead at 96

Hung Wai Ching, retired real estate developer, prominent Chinese community leader, former YMCA administrator and former University of Hawai'i regent, died Feb. 9 at St. Francis Medical Center Liliha.

Ching, who lived in Honolulu, was 96 years old.

In 1928, he received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Hawai'i. In 1989, UH awarded Ching, who had argued against the imprisonment of Hawai'i's Japanese community during World War II, an honorary degree.

Ching is survived by sons King-Lit and Sai; by his daughter, Su-Sun Wang; his sister, Bessie Loo; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Community Church of Honolulu.

The memorial service will be held immediately afterward. The family requests aloha attire. They also request no flowers.
