Wahine fall short in softball Paradise Classic

The University of Hawai'i softball team beat Texas-Arlington, but lost to Long Beach State in the championship of the Chevron Paradise Classic yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Long Beach State's Lindsey Knoff pitched a two-hitter with no walks and three strikeouts as the 49ers routed the Wahine, 9-1.

Christina Zepeda batted 3-for-4 and Jamie Farnworth drove in two runs for Long Beach State.

The Wahine committed four errors and only three of the 49ers' runs were earned.

Long Beach State scored five unearned runs on three hits and three errors in the top of the seventh inning.

In the earlier game, Sheri Oronoz pitched a five-hitter, homered and drove in two runs as the Wahine beat the Lady Mavericks, 7-2.

Oronoz walked one and struck out four.

Stacey Porter also drove in two runs for the Wahine.

Hawai'i, which lost to Long Beach State earlier in the double-elimination round, needed to beat the 49ers twice to win the tournament championship.

Long Beach State is 14-4, Hawai'i 9-6 and Texas-Arlington 7-10.
