Iolani earns top seed in state basketball

Iolani and Kalaheo, undefeated and ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in The Advertiser Top 10, were awarded the top seeds in the Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Basketball Championship Tournament.

Iolani (12-0), champions of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, received the top seed, followed by Kalaheo (13-0) of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, Lahainaluna (13-1) of the Maui Interscholastic League, and Waiakea (11-3) of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation. The four seeded teams receive a bye in the first round, which begins Wednesday at Radford High gym and Kekuhaupi'o Gym on the Kamehameha Schools campus.

The championship game is at 8 p.m. Saturday at Blaisdell Arena, and will be broadcast live on KGMB (channel 9, Oceanic Cable 7).

Also in the tournament are Mililani (12-1), Castle (10-4) and Kaimuki (9-4) of the public-school OIA; Punahou (9-3) and Kamehameha (9-5) of the private-school ILH; Waimea (7-2) of the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation, Kealakehe (11-4) of the BIIF and either Baldwin (10-3) or King Kekaulike (10-5) of the MIL.

The Bears and Na Ali'i will play today for the final berth.

    KQNG (570) will cover all Kaua'i games ; KHLO (850) and KIPA (620) will cover all Big Island games; KMVI (550) will cover all Maui games.

GOLF

• Wilson wins at Hilo: Dean Wilson shot a 5-under-par 66 yesterday to defend his title at the Hilo Invitational Tournament at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Wilson, who finished with a 133, is a Kane'ohe resident who plays on the Japan Golf Tour Organization. He finished four strokes ahead of Jarett Hamamoto, who shared the lead with Wilson entering yesterday's play.

Hamamoto shot a 70 in the final round.

PADDLING

• Castle, Mililani win: Castle won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls and mixed varsity paddling championships Saturday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The Castle girls finished with a time of 4 minutes, 39.4 seconds; the Knights' mixed team won in 4:26.0.

Mililani won the boys varsity title in 4:09.1.

The top teams qualify for the first state championships March 2 at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
