Akaka not sure about airline deal
Associated Press
U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka said yesterday he is undecided on whether to support the planned merger of Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.
Akaka, D-Hawai'i, said he understands the financial benefits for the two Honolulu-based carriers, but is concerned about eliminating competition and possible layoffs.
"I have family that are in the airlines, and many friends," Akaka said. "Of course, we want to see the airlines continue to support and provide transportation for Hawai'i."
The senator spoke yesterday in Waikiki at a Teamsters regional meeting.
