Skateboarder critically injured

A 20-year-old Kaimuki man was in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday morning after a skateboarding accident at Kapi'olani Community College, police said.

The accident happened at 1:55 a.m., when the man fell off his skateboard and hit his head on the ground at a slope near the college's Ilima Building. He was with two other skateboarders when the accident happened.


Fisherman held in stabbing

A dispute between two fishermen led to a stabbing Sunday morning in Iwilei, and police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of first-degree assault.

According to police, the two fishermen were drinking aboard a boat moored at Pier 17 when an argument started about 4:15 a.m.

The 29-year-old fisherman chased his 35-year-old drinking partner with a knife and stabbed him several times, police said. The injured man was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition, police said.


Senior center on agenda

A city consultant will discuss the site selection for a senior citizen multipurpose center in Nu'uanu Valley during the Nu'uanu/Punchbowl Neighborhood Board meeting at 7:15 p.m. today at Booth District Park on Kaneali'i Avenue.

The city is considering three sites for the project — at Nu'uanu Valley Park, on Board of Water Supply property off the Pali Highway and at Nu'uanu Elementary School.

The board will also update vision team projects and try to fill two board vacancies.


Grant to help asthmatic kids

The American Lung Association of Hawai'i has received a $25,000 grant to help school children cope with asthma.

The grant from the Leahi Fund of the Hawai'i Community Foundation will provide teaching materials and staff for the Open Airways for Schools program. The program teaches students between the ages of 8 and 11 to cope with their asthmatic condition.

More than 40,000 children under age 14 suffer from asthma, making Hawai'i one of the leading states in the nation for this disease.

The Lung Association has sponsored community-based asthma programs for more than 25 years and now offers asthma sports day camps in all counties.


Free lecture on heart attacks

The Queen's Medical Center will present a free lecture Feb. 27 on ways people can protect themselves against heart attacks.

Dr. Frederic Pashkow, medical director of the Queen's Heart Institute, will help people understand their risk factors after a heart attack, angioplasty or bypass. He also will discuss common misperceptions about heart attacks and teach people to effectively manage their risk of heart attack.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Hawai'i, contributing to nearly half of all deaths.

The lecture will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Kamehameha Auditorium at The Queen's Medical Center, 1301 Punchbowl St. Space is limited and reservations are suggested. Call the Queen's referral line at 537-7117.


Conference on teaching art

University of Hawai'i president Evan Dobelle will be the keynote speaker at the Governor's Conference on Arts Education March 2 at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

"Arts First: Standards for Success" is the fifth annual statewide arts education conference designed for teachers, school administrators, artists, parents, students and government, business and community leaders.

The event will feature several national arts educators, including Deborah Brzoska, consultant with the Kennedy Center's Partners in Education Program; Mac Arthur Goodwin, president of the National Art Education Association; and Doug Herbert, director of the arts education at the National Endowment for the Arts.

Money for the conference is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts through the State Foundation on Arts.

The conference registration fee is $40, which includes lunch and conference materials. To register or to request a free brochure, call the University of Hawai'i Conference Center at 956-8204.

The registration deadline is Feb. 24.

Wai'alae Kahala board to meet

At its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday the Wai'alae Kahala Neighborhood Board will hear an update on the Waialae Country Club's application to erect 60-foot poles on its golf course.

The board also will hear from the O'ahu Trans For All on the proposed bus rapid transit program and the Kahala Citizens Traffic committee.

The board meets at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1350 Hunakai St.
